At the end of the year, the project „Development of Transport and Port Communication Systems” (Trans-Port), co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, is winding up. Within the framework of the project, a number of activities aimed at the improvement of the Port of Ventspils communication systems were carried out, and as a result, a part of navigation buoys in the Port of Ventspils and adjacent waters are being equipped with an automatic identification system (AIS).
In September, a number of navigation buoys of Ventspils Port will be equipped with the automatic identification system (AIS) devices. At the moment, the procurement tender for supplying and installation of the system has ended, a contract with the winner, the Finnish company Sabik Oy, has been concluded, as well as a 50% prepayment made.

The improvement of the communication system of Ventspils Port is being carried out within the framework of the project „Development of Transport and Port Communication Systems” (Trans-Port) co-financed by ERDF. A week ago, the project partners met in Jelgava to report on the progress of the project and to decide on the next steps to be taken for a successful implementation of the project activities.
In Ventspils, the latest generation AIS devices will be installed on the most distant navigation buoys warning ships of dangerous shallow waters. With the help of the system, it will be easy to monitor a possible displacement of a buoy or any damage to it, and to eliminate any of these misfunctions immediately. Also, there are plans to mount AIS on the hydrographic vessel „Kapteinis Orle” of Ventspils Free Port.
As introduction and application of AIS means a certain novelty for ports of Latvia, representatives of project member ports - Ventspils, Liepāja and Klaipeda – at the beginning of summer went on an experience exchange trip to the Port of Barcelona to obtain a wider perspective of really demonstrable experience of other ports regarding the system operation, potential risks and opportunities for the development of the system. During the visit, the project partners obtained expert opinions and advice from professionals of the Port of Barcelona, as well as received useful information regarding efficient maintenance of ship AIS and control systems for port gateways.
The implementation period of the Trans-Port project lasts from 1 October 2010 to 31 December 2011. The project is being implemented with ERDF co-financing within the framework of Latvia-Lithuania Cross-Border Cooperation Programme 2007-2013. The project partners on Latvian side are Kurzeme Planning Region (Lead Partner), Zemgale Planning Region, Latgale Planning Region, Saldus Municipality, the Port of Liepāja and Ventspils Free Port. Partners on Lithuanian side are Šiauliai Region Development Agency, Mažeikiai District Municipality and the Port of Klaipeda.
The project budget totals EUR 763’491, including EUR 460’100 or 60% from the total budget for setting up the infrastructure.
