Freeport of Ventspils Authority Presents Hydrogen Derivatives Bunkering Model Testing Results in Helsinki

From 15 to 17 September, the H2Deri@BSP project partners met in person in Helsinki, Finland. Ventspils Freeport Authority was represented by renewable energy cluster developer Kaspars Liepiņš, and the meeting was hosted by project partner Gasum.

During the meeting, the partners visited the Port of Helsinki and toured the Katajanokka and South Harbour areas, where they had the opportunity to see first-hand the implemented and planned infrastructure modernisation and port decarbonisation solutions at one of Europe’s busiest passenger ports.

The partners also visited Gasum’s biogas production facility in Lohja to learn how biological waste is processed into biogas and organic fertiliser. This provided a practical example of how circular economy solutions can also contribute to cleaner and more sustainable shipping.

During the partner meeting, Kaspars Liepiņš, representing Freeport of Ventspils Authority, presented the latest results of testing the techno-commercial analysis model. The model forms part of the guidelines developed within the project on port infrastructure and the provision of bunkering for hydrogen derivatives.

Other partners presented the progress made in developing a port bunkering mapping tool, a methanol bunkering truck solution, the preparation of specifications for a methanol bunkering vessel, as well as the assessment of regulatory and safety requirements for the handling and bunkering of hydrogen derivatives in ports.

The meeting in Helsinki was the fourth meeting of the project partners. The aim of the H2Deri@BSP project is to develop appropriate strategies that will enable the participating ports to transform into sustainable energy hubs in a timely manner and contribute to reducing CO₂ emissions in the Baltic Sea Region.

The H2-Derivatives@BalticSeaPorts project is co-financed by the European Union through the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme 2021–2027. The project implementation period runs until 29 February 2028.
