At the end of the year, the project „Development of Transport and Port Communication Systems” (Trans-Port), co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, is winding up. Within the framework of the project, a number of activities aimed at the improvement of the Port of Ventspils communication systems were carried out, and as a result, a part of navigation buoys in the Port of Ventspils and adjacent waters are being equipped with an automatic identification system (AIS).

The new Bypass Bridge opened

29.06.2009

On May 30, 2009, with a festive ceremony, the new bridge over the river Venta was officially opened. In a public poll, inhabitants of Ventspils have chosen the name of the new bridge – Apvedtilts (Bypass Bridge). Local residents and all those interested were invited to be among the first to cross the newly-built bridge.

Commissioned by the Free Port of Ventspils Authority, the construction of the bridge was started at the beginning of 2008 and completed in less than a year’s time. Apvedtilts is 174 m long and 12 m wide, including the driving part of 7.5 m. Motor transport will be organized in two lanes.

In constructing the bridge banks, EPS (expanded polystyrene) blocks were used for the first time in Latvia. This solution was offered by the designers – experts of „Witteveen + Bos”, a company from the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, EPS blocks for building dams and fills for various structures are very widely used, and this has been regarded as a technically good solution over a number of years. The total length of the newly-built access roads – Rūpniecības Street and Fabrikas Street – is approx. 700 m. Also, new engineering networks have been laid and those already existing – reconstructed.

The construction work on the bridge was performed by AS „BMGS”, while SIA „Variants” was responsible for building the access roads.

In August this year, the currently used motor transport bridge will be closed for reconstruction, and during the reconstruction period, which will be one year, all the traffic connecting the two banks of the river Venta, will be diverted across the new bridge – Apvedtilts.

The construction of the new bridge cost 4.7 million LVL, while the construction of the access roads – 1.7 million LVL. The construction of the bridge was performed within the framework of a large-scale project „Reconstruction of access roads to the terminals of Ventspils Port”, with support provided from the European Union Cohesion Fund. In total, the project was allocated financing from EU Cohesion Fund in the amount of 15.9 million EUR and the public financing in the amount of 3.9 million EUR.
