Last year the port of Ventspils was joined by new operator – Finnlines company, providing transportation of passengers and cargo to St. Petersburg and Lübeck in Germany. In its turn, Scandlines, appreciating the interest of passenger and carrier in Ventspils, at the end of 2010 year for the line Ventspils - Nynäshamn appointed a new, larger-capacity ferry, produced in 2009, that can take about 120 trailers and 500 passengers.
In 2010, the number of ferry passengers has increased by 16% in comparison with 2009, number of cars by 29%, cargo by 43%.
Such an active ferry traffic cannot be found in any other port in Latvia, but the work continues, this position has to be strengthened and developed further. This year Free port of Ventspils will start the study of interesting tourism region Gotland –Ventspils – Sarema for ferry line sustainability.Studywill begranted by theInterreg fund.
It should be emphasized that the Ventspils Free Port has done a lot to make Ventspils as attractive, comfortable and safe place for the ferry traffic. Already in 1998 the port authority made a strategic decision to develop ferry traffic from Ventspils port. In the following years Free Port of Ventspils Authority constructed two RoRo ramps for ferry services. Ventspils is the only port in Latvia and one of the few ports in Europe, where the flow of tourists and cargo is separated, in that way providing convenient service for both. With a support of EU funds, Free Port of Ventspils has built comfortable terminal for freight forwarders and modern terminal for passengers.
