In March 2011, Ventspils port transshipped more than 3 million tons of cargo. Compared with March last year, the total cargo turnover at the port increased by 20, 45%. The data of this year’s quarter shows that the turnover of the port is similar to last year`s first quarter.
Already in February data indicated a tendency towards increasing the amount of cargoes at the port of Ventspils. In March this year the total cargo turnover of Ventspils port were 3.047 million tons, an increase of 866 thousand tones more than in February and for 522 thousand tones or 20.45% over march last year. The last time more than 3 million tons were transshipped per month in March, 2007 (3.123), and prior to that only in April 2002 (3.203). The largest cargo volume at the Ventspils free port in the March traditionally was to the oil cargo (1.465 million tons), up by 15.9% over February.
In March 180 vessels came in the port of Ventspils and that is about 18 vessels more, than in March last year. Total in this year’s first quarter 463 vessels came in the Ventspils port, and that is for 17 vessels more than last year.
During first quarter in total 3.938 million tons of liquid cargo were transshiped, 2.588 million tons of bulk cargo and 634 million thousand tons of general cargo. Although the total bulk cargo volume in the third quarter comparing with last year’s first quarter, slightly decreased (about 2.27%) , port of Ventspils in March reached a new bulk cargo volume – 1.306 million tons. So far the best bulk cargo rate was in February 2005. (1.004 million tons). Total cargo turnover in the port of Ventspils in the first quarter was 7.160 million tons, which is similar with a period before year, decreased only for 0.67%.
