At the end of the year, the project „Development of Transport and Port Communication Systems” (Trans-Port), co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, is winding up. Within the framework of the project, a number of activities aimed at the improvement of the Port of Ventspils communication systems were carried out, and as a result, a part of navigation buoys in the Port of Ventspils and adjacent waters are being equipped with an automatic identification system (AIS).
In Ventspils, the latest generation AIS are being installed on four most distant navigation buoys that warn ships of dangerous shallow waters. The new equipment will also be installed on two landfall navigation buoys and on the bouy intended for marking of wreckage location. Both the ships and the Navigation Support Service will receive information from the bouy about its location and technical condition. Thus, by the instrumentality of the system, in future, the port professionals will find it much easier to monitor a possible displacement of the buoys or any damage to them. AIS has also been mounted on Ventspils Free Port’s hydrographic vessel „Kapteinis Orle”, which, upon receiving the relevant information from the bouys, will be able to track them and eliminate their misfunctions, where necessary, immediately and effectively.
In accordance with the procurement tender results, the system has been supplied by the Finnish company Sabik Oy. At present, the Free Port of Ventspils Authority has received all the equipment and finalised testing operations, but the system components are going to be installed onto the bouys step by step, replacing the batteries of flashlights or other fittings.
On December 27, representatives of the Free Port of Ventspils are going to attend the Trans-Port Project closing conference held in Liepāja, where they will meet the other project partners, as well as others involved in the project, and report on the project activities and results achieved in the Port of Ventspils.
The Trans-Port Project was launhed on October 1, 2010, and is being implemented with co-financing received from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the Latvia-Lithuania Cross-Border Cooperation Programme 2007-2013. The project partners on Latvian side are Kurzeme Planning Region (Lead Partner), Zemgale Planning Region, Latgale Planning Region, Saldus Municipality, the Port of Liepāja and Ventspils Free Port. Partners on Lithuanian side are Šiauliai Region Development Agency, Mažeikiai District Municipality and the Port of Klaipeda.
The project budget totals EUR 763’491, with EUR 460’100 or 60% from the total budget allocated for setting up the infrastructure. The co-financing allocated for the programme comprises 85%.
