The buoys of the Port of Ventspils are becoming more up-to-date

At the end of the year, the project „Development of Transport and Port Communication Systems” (Trans-Port), co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, is winding up. Within the framework of the project, a number of activities aimed at the improvement of the Port of Ventspils communication systems were carried out, and as a result, a part of navigation buoys in the Port of Ventspils and adjacent waters are being equipped with an automatic identification system (AIS).

Cargo turnover in November increased for 23%

In November 2011 cargo turnover in Freeport of Ventspils was 23%  more than during November last year. After 11 months of 2011 Freeport of Ventspils handled 26 million tons of cargo, which is  14% more than over the same period last year. 

Cargo turnover at the Port of Ventspils has increased by 6%

In the first seven months of 2011 Ventspils Port handled 16.613 million tons of cargo, which is  6% more than over the same period last year. In July the cargo turnover of the port amounted to 2.132 million tons.

Project „Development of Transport and Port Communication Systems”

The project is being implemented with ERDF co-financing within the framework of Latvia-Lithuania Cross Border Cooperation Programme 2007 – 2013 year.


The project partners from the Latvian side are Kurzeme Planning Region (Lead Partner), Zemgale Planning Region, Latgale Planning Region, Saldus Municipality, Port of Liepaja and Ventspils Free Port. Partners from the Lithuanian side are Siauliai Region Development Agency, Mažeikiai District Municipal Administration and Port of Klaipeda.


The main objective of the project is facilitation of socioeconomic development of Latvia-Lithuania border areas, development of cross border transport infrastructure, introducing new logistics solutions for cargo transportation and improving the quality and accessibility of public transport services.


Within the framework of project the modernization and improvement of port communication systems will be done, that provides the communication systems development of two largest ports of the region of Kurzeme - Liepaja and Ventspils, as well as of Klaipeda port. During the project realization Port Gate Control System (PGCS) will be introduced in Liepaja port and improved at Klaipeda port, but modernization of navigation aids will be done at Ventspils port, introducing Automatic Identification Systems (AIS). Also the information systems for exchanging data between port companies and state authorities will be improved at Klaipeda port (KIPIS).


A study on public transport availability and optimization capabilities will also be done. During work the cross border public transport needs and future development opportunities will be find out. The data on passenger flows, their intensity at the Latvia - Lithuania border regions will be studied and analyzed to obtain a systematic and objective review and assessment of existing public transport services, especially with regard to inter-regional and cross border traffic. Basing on the assessment of existing systems, possible directions of development will be established, and the recommendations for the optimum linkage of systems provided, considering the Latvia - Lithuania border region socioeconomic, demographic, administrative territorial and other development factors.


Basing on the intensity of passenger flows, a feasibility study for the public transport route „Mazeikiai – Saldus – Rīga (Riga airport)” will be worked out.


The total project budget is 763 491 EUR, including 460 100 EUR or 60% of the total budget for the formation of infrastructure. The co-financing of programme is 85%.
