Berth No. 16 at the Port of Ventspils has been undergoing extensive reconstruction so that vessels using the berth will be able to use electricity instead of diesel while alongside. Once the reconstruction is completed, Ventspils will have an environmentally friendly berth, resulting in lower noise levels and reduced emissions in the city.
Foundations for the shore power supply equipment have already been constructed at the berth. Concrete works are currently underway, along with the installation of steel beams for the cable duct cover. Construction is also in progress in the green area adjacent to the berth, primarily involving the installation of underground utility networks required to connect the shore power supply equipment for vessels. In the near future, construction of the pile foundations for the modules housing the main electrical equipment is scheduled to begin.
Berth No. 16 was constructed in 2000 and serves ferries and passenger vessels, providing the berthing and handling of ferries and passenger vessels. It is currently used extensively by the ferries operated by Stena Line, which provide passenger transport on the Ventspils–Nynäshamn (Sweden)–Ventspils route.
The Freeport of Ventspils Authority signed the contract for the construction of the electrical grid connection point in December 2025, following an open procurement procedure in which the supplier consortium RPI-ISP was awarded the contract. The contract value amounts to nearly EUR 4 million, excluding VAT. This will be the first berth in the Port of Ventspils where ferries will be able to use a high-capacity shore power connection. In accordance with the contract schedule, construction works at the berth are expected to be completed in early 2027.
The construction of the electrical grid connection point at Berth No. 16 forms part of a broader project to upgrade the shore power infrastructure at Berths No. 14, 15 and 16, which is planned to be implemented in three independent phases. The first phase of the construction project—the reconstruction of Berth No. 16—is being carried out as one of two activities under the project "Renovation of the Ventspils Freeport Vessel Traffic Management Centre and Electrification of Berths".
The project is being implemented with support from the European Union Cohesion Fund. The total eligible project costs amount to EUR 4,772,941.00, of which EUR 4,056,999.50 is financed by Cohesion Fund. The project implementation period runs until 31 December 2029.
