This week, “Global Smart Ports 2023” was held in Hamburg, Germany, bringing together experts from ports and other maritime-related organizations from around the world to exchange thoughts and experiences regarding the future directions of modern port development. Igors Udodovs, The Deputy CEO of the Freeport of Ventspils, Head of Marketing and Development Department, took part in the summit panel debate about future changes in shipping.

“Both the political landscape and the industry are now quite clearly and loudly stating that the so-called green course is the only direction of port development. Companies are increasingly demanding environmentally friendly solutions in ports. It is crucial to understand that it is a whole complex of measures for economic, social, and ecological well-being. A smart port means not only digitalization but also decarbonization, which means exploring the possibilities of using alternative fuels, producing future fuels in the port, establishing “green corridors” and other initiatives. We are presently addressing all of these issues in Ventspils because we are aware that Ventspils has all the advantages to develop into a hub for future energy production and export,” emphasizes I. Udodovs.

The goal of “Global Smart Ports 2023” is to integrate emerging technologies with corporate identity and human capital to embrace, adapt, and implement both new and developed technologies, thereby advancing the maritime industry and conventional ports toward a digital future. The summit also focused on cybersecurity issues and the use of artificial intelligence opportunities in the industry.
