Freeport of Ventspils Signs Cooperation Agreement with the Port of Chornomorsk, Ukraine

Today, on April 18, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed in Ventspils between the Freeport of Ventspils Authority and the Ukrainian state enterprise “Commercial Sea Port "Chornomorsk".” The memorandum was signed by Mr. Igors Udodovs, Deputy CEO and Head of the Marketing and Development Department of the Freeport of Ventspils Authority, and Mr. Pavlo Podolian, Deputy Director for Economics of the Port of Chornomorsk.

In the first quarter of 2025, the volume of cargo in the Freeport of Ventspils has increased by 1.5%

In the first three months of 2025, the terminals operating in the Freeport of Ventspils handled a total of 2.38 million tons of cargo, which is 1.5% more than in the first quarter of 2024. The volume of transshipped oil products and cargo transported by ferries has increased, while the volume of coal has decreased the most.

To make shipping more environmentally friendly, the European Union is developing projects that promote the use of alternative fuels. The H2Derivatives@BSP cooperation project of seven European countries is one of those that is expected to play a dominant role in this process. Its goal is to design hydrogen alternative fuel infrastructure in the ports of the Baltic Sea. The Freeport of Ventspils Authority is one of the leading partners in the project and will be accountable for developing a technical and business model for producing and using renewable energy and alternative fuels in ports.

Will explore opportunities and create solutions for the development of the blue economy in the Freeport of Ventspils

Over the next four years, the Freeport of Ventspils Authority, participating in the project “MarTe: Marine Technology Excellence Hub for Sustainable Blue Economy in the Baltics”, funded by Horizon Europe, the key funding programme for research and innovation of the European Union, will analyze the opportunities of the Freeport of Ventspils to develop its operations following the opportunities and sustainability prerequisites of the blue economy. The project, aiming to work out practical solutions and policy improvement suggestions for the blue economy in Estonia and Latvia, involves 13 education and research, public sector, business development, and non-governmental organizations.

The Freeport of Ventspils Authority continues to explore renewable energy resources, drawing insights from industry experts in other countries. At the end of November, Kaspars Liepiņš, the developer of the renewable energy cluster of the Freeport of Ventspils Authority, participated in the event “Offshore Wind Visit to the Netherlands”, taking place in the Netherlands.

The Latvian company SIA PurpleGreen Energy C (PurpleGreen), which is developing a project to construct a green ammonia production plant within the territory of the Freeport of Ventspils, and the German energy resources trading company S.E.T. Select Energy GmbH, along with its subsidiary Select New Energies GmbH (SET), signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 24 October of this year in Hamburg, Germany, for the sale of 550 thousand tonnes of green ammonia per annum over a twenty-year period.
